INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

ENGLISH:
Ciencias Marinas is a peer-reviewed, quarterly bilingual journal that publishes original papers on research in all areas of marine
science. Four categories of contributions are accepted:
1. Research papers report findings of original research. Papers should be clear and concise. They should not exceed 25 pages
(21.5 × 28.0 cm), typed double-spaced in 12-point font (Times New Roman), including text, figures and tables. Longer articles
will be published on rare occasions. Systematic lists are not accepted.
2. Research notes report scientific results that are of particular importance and merit rapid publication. They should not be used
for preliminary results. Papers should not exceed 10 pages (typed double-spaced in 12-point font, Times New Roman) and must
contain sufficient data to establish that reliable and significant results have been obtained.
3. Review articles provide a comprehensive and novel assessment of an important region or particular discipline in marine
sciences. Strict criteria are applied to this contribution category regarding quality, importance, potential controversies, general
interest, and relevance for future research. Review articles must be submitted in English and are accepted for revision only after
prior consultation with the editor-in-chief.
4. Comments on a previously published paper. The author of the original paper will be given the opportunity to present a reply.
The comments and reply will then be published together. Papers are open for written discussion for up to one year following their
original publication.
Ciencias Marinas charges a publication fee of US$10.00 per final printed page.
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Authors should register (free of charge) at www.cienciasmarinas.com and submit their electronic manuscripts in portable
document format (PDF) following an easy five-step submission process in their newly created Author account. Authors must
attach an additional file containing the names and corresponding information (institution, address, phone number, and e-mail)
of five potential reviewers. These reviewers should not be associated to the author’s institution and at least two of these five
individuals must belong to an institution in a country different from that of the author’s institution.
All papers are published in Spanish and English and must be submitted in either or both of these languages (except review
articles). Once the manuscript has been accepted, translation into either language can be provided, if requested by the author, at a
cost of US$10.00 per double-spaced page. Authors will be charged for the editing of poor translations.
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or
as part of a published lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration elsewhere, that its publication is approved by
all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be
published elsewhere in the same form without the written consent of the copyright-holder.
Presentation of the manuscript
• The manuscript must have line numbers in all its parts.
• Title page: should show the title, name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s) and full postal address(es), running title, and the name,
address, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author. The running title should not exceed 60 characters and
should be as close as possible to the full title.
• Page one: should include the title of the contribution, abstract and a maximum of five key words. The abstract should be
concise, informative and should not exceed 300 words. Authors must also provide the abstract (resumen) and key words
(palabras clave) in Spanish even if they subsequently request to have the paper translated.
• Text: should be divided into sections (e.g., introduction, material and methods, results, discussion) and, if necessary,
subsections. The main conclusions can be presented in a short separate section or should be included and explicit in the
discussion. Words or letters to be printed in italics should be indicated. The International System (SI) of units and abbreviations
should be used. Footnotes should not be used in the body text. Information presented in tabular form in the text itself should be of
single column width; anything larger than this should be presented in the form of a table. All figures and tables must be cited in
numerical order in the text.
• Acknowledgements.
• References: care should be taken that all those quoted in the paper are included. The following examples may be used to cite
within the text: (Morales 2009a, b), (Morales and Pérez 2010), (Morales et al. 2009). Unpublished material should not be used as
references, though personal written communications may be acknowledged, in parentheses, in the text if necessary. The accuracy
of the references is the responsibility of the author. In the case of authors who use two surnames, both should be cited and, to
avoid confusion, they should be hyphenated when referred to in the text. Examples:

• Appendices (if any).
• Tables: should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals; they should be presented on separate pages and given a concise
title. Vertical rules should be avoided. All text within the tables should be in English; only the captions will appear in both
languages.
• Figures and figure captions: for the peer-review process, illustrations should be saved as images and included in the same PDF
file as the text, tables, and figure captions. Figures should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and all the descriptive
text should be in English only. Once the manuscript has been accepted for publication, each figure file should be delivered
separately in digital editable format as a supplementary metafile (Windows Metafile, wmf). Original electronic versions of
figures in Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Excel and Sigma Plot are also accepted as final versions for publishing. By editable, we
mean that all figure elements (objects, lines, legends, axes, letters, numbers, etc.) should be independent to be modified
separately as required. Figures will be reduced to an approximate size of 15 × 15 cm, and care should be taken to ensure that the
size of the letters and thickness of the lines will still be legible after final reduction (once reduced, lettering should not be less
than 8 points). All figure files should indicate the figure number. Photographs should be provided with a resolution greater than
300 dpi and without any legend or symbol, together with a copy indicating the symbols required, such as scale-bars, arrows or
letters, and numbers. Color illustrations can be published when necessary at the author’s expense. Figure captions should be
typed on a separate page at the end of the text.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Manuscripts returned to authors should be revised and sent back to the editor within a period of two months.
After that, they will be treated as new manuscripts and the review process will begin again. Manuscripts and illustrations that do
not comply with these guidelines will be returned to the authors.
SENDING FINAL VERSION FOR PRINTING
Once accepted, authors should send, either via e-mail or the journal’s website, the electronic version of the manuscript (Spanish
and English, or indicate whether the translation will be required), in Microsoft Word or RTF, and the editable files of the figures.
The manuscript should be arranged as follows: title, author(s), affiliation(s) and address(es), running title, information of the
corresponding author (including e-mail), abstract (resumen) and key words (palabras clave) in both languages even if the
translation is requested, body text, acknowledgements, references, tables, figure captions and figures. Each page of the
manuscript should be numbered consecutively.
Once manuscripts have been accepted, they become the property of Ciencias Marinas and originals will not be returned.
Proofs and offprints
Authors will receive page proofs for correction via e-mail in PDF format. Corrections to the text other than typesetting errors
must be kept to a minimum. Major changes will be done at the author’s expense. Proofs should be returned promptly via e-mail.
Authors will be able to access and download a PDF copy of the final, published version of their article directly from the Ciencias
Marinas website (www.cienciasmarinas.com).

INSTRUCCIONES PARA LOS AUTORES
Ciencias Marinas es una revista trimestral arbitrada que publica en forma bilingüe trabajos originales sobre investigación en
todas las áreas de las ciencias del mar. Se aceptan cuatro categorÃas de contribuciones:
1. ArtÃculos de investigación indican resultados de investigación original. Los artÃculos deben ser claros y concisos, de no más
de 25 páginas (tamaño carta, a doble espacio, con un tamaño de letra [Times New Roman] de 12 puntos), incluyendo texto,
figuras y tablas. Sólo en casos especiales se publicarán artÃculos extensos. No se aceptan listas sistemáticas.
2. Notas de investigación se utilizan para comunicar resultados originales que, por su mérito cientÃfico, ameritan una rápida
publicación. No deben ser utilizadas para la publicación de datos preliminares. Las notas, de no más de 10 páginas (tamaño carta,
a doble espacio, con un tamaño de letra [Times New Roman] de 12 puntos), deben contener datos suficientes para establecer que
se han obtenido resultados confiables y significativos.
3. ArtÃculos de revisión proporcionan una evaluación completa y novedosa de una región importante o disciplina particular de
las ciencias del mar. Se aplican criterios estrictos a estos trabajos en cuanto a calidad, importancia, controversias potenciales,
interés general y relevancia para el futuro de la investigación. Estas contribuciones se aceptarán para su revisión sólo después de
la consulta previa con el Editor en Jefe de Ciencias Marinas y deberán ser redactadas en idioma inglés.
4. Comentarios sobre un artÃculo reciente. El autor del artÃculo original tendrá oportunidad de presentar una respuesta. Los
comentarios y la respuesta se publicarán juntos. Los artÃculos están abiertos a discusión hasta un año después de su publicación
original.
Ciencias Marinas cobra US$10.00 (o su equivalente en moneda mexicana) por página publicada, ya aceptado el manuscrito.
ENVÃ?O DE MANUSCRITOS
Para someter su manuscrito usted deberá registrarse (de forma gratuita) en www.cienciasmarinas.com y enviar su manuscrito a
través de su nueva cuenta de Autor en formato PDF, siguiendo los cinco pasos del proceso de envÃo allà indicados. El autor
deberá anexar un archivo con los datos (nombre, institución, dirección, teléfono y correo electrónico) de cinco revisores potenciales
que no estén adscritos a su propia institución y al menos dos deberán ser de un paÃs diferente al de la adscripción del autor.
Los manuscritos (excepto los artÃculos de revisión) pueden ser enviados en español o inglés o ambos idiomas. A solicitud del
autor, una vez aceptado su artÃculo, la revista proporciona el servicio de traducción a un costo de US$10.00 (o su equivalente en
moneda mexicana) por cuartilla a doble espacio. No se aceptarán traducciones de mala calidad.
El envÃo de un manuscrito implica que el trabajo descrito no se ha publicado previamente (excepto en forma de resumen o como
parte de una ponencia publicada o tesis académica), que no se ha sometido a otra parte, que su publicación ha sido aprobada por
todos los autores y de forma tácita o explÃcita por las autoridades donde se realizó el trabajo y que, en caso de aceptarse, no se
publicará en otra parte en la misma forma sin el consentimiento escrito del dueño de los derechos de autor.
Presentación del manuscrito
• El manuscrito debe incluir los números de lÃnea en todas sus partes.
• Página titular: deberá incluir el tÃtulo, nombre(s) del(los) autor(es), institución(es) donde se realizó la investigación y
dirección(es) de la(s) misma(s) y un tÃtulo corto para el encabezado de página, asà como el nombre, dirección, números de
teléfono y fax, y el correo electrónico del autor que se encargará de la correspondencia. El tÃtulo corto deberá ser de un máximo
de 60 caracteres y lo más parecido al tÃtulo completo.
• Página uno: deberá incluir el tÃtulo de la contribución, el resumen (sÃntesis de los resultados en menos de 300 vocablos) y un
máximo de cinco palabras clave. El autor proporcionará el resumen (abstract) y las palabras clave (key words) en inglés aunque
posteriormente solicite la traducción del artÃculo a la revista.
• Texto: se dividirá en secciones (e.g., introducción, materiales y métodos, resultados, discusión) y, si es necesario, subsecciones.
Las principales conlusiones del trabajo pueden ser presentadas en una sección corta de conclusiones o formar una subsección de
la sección de discusiones. Deberán indicarse los nombres cientÃficos y otras palabras que se imprimirán en cursivas. Se usará el
Sistema Internacional de Unidades, abreviando las unidades sin punto final. El texto no deberá contener notas al pie de página.
La información presentada en forma tabular dentro del texto deberá ser del ancho de una columna de la revista; cualquier cosa
mayor deberá presentarse en forma de tabla. Se mencionarán, en orden numérico, todas las figuras y tablas en el texto.
• Agradecimientos.
• Referencias: se listan únicamente las que se citan en el artÃculo. Se pueden usar los siguientes ejemplos para citar dentro del
texto: (Morales 2009a, b), (Morales and Pérez 2010), (Morales et al. 2009). No se deberán incluir en la lista las referencias a
material no publicado. Las comunicaciones personales pueden ser reconocidas, entre paréntesis, en el texto y deben usarse lo
menos posible. La precisión de las referencias es responsabilidad del autor. Cuando se trate de autores que utilicen dos apellidos,
ambos deberán usarse al ser citados y, para evitar confusiones, deberán unirse con un guión. Ejemplos:

• Tablas: se deberán numerar consecutivamente con números arábigos; se presentarán en hojas separadas, con un tÃtulo breve y
sin lÃneas verticales. El texto dentro de las tablas deberá presentarse en idioma inglés. Las leyendas apareceran en ambos idiomas.
• Figuras y lista de figuras: para el proceso de revisión inicial, las figuras deberán ser presentadas como imágenes, en archivo
PDF, al final del texto. Se numerarán consecutivamente con números arábigos, y los textos descriptivos contenidos en ellas
deberán ser en idioma inglés. Una vez aceptado el manuscrito para publicación, cada ilustración o figura deberá enviarse en
formato digital editable, como archivo suplementario Windows Metafile (.wmf). También se reciben archivos electrónicos
originales de Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Excel y Sigma Plot. Por editable, se refiere a que todos los elementos que la
componen (objetos, lÃneas, leyendas, ejes etc.) se puedan desagrupar y modificar independientemente. Cada figura (o conjunto de
figuras) deberá ajustarse, después de la reducción apropiada (hasta 60%), a un tamaño aproximado de 15 × 15 cm, manteniendo
la legibilidad en los textos, calidad de lÃnea y reproducción de pantallas (la tipografÃa ya reducida no deberá ser menor que 8
puntos). Se deberá indicar el número de la figura en el mismo archivo. Las fotografÃas deberán enviarse en formato electrónico
con una resolución no menor de 300 dpi, sin leyendas ni sÃmbolos, anexando una copia en la que aparezcan las leyendas o
sÃmbolos requeridos como escalas, orientaciones, flechas, letras o números. En el caso de requerirse impresiones a color, el autor
pagará el costo de las mismas. Los pies de figura se enviarán como lista de figuras en un página independiente al final del texto.
NOTA IMPORTANTE: Cuando el autor demore más de dos meses en responder a las sugerencias del editor y/o los revisores, dicho
artÃculo será dado de baja. En caso de que se desee sea considerado para publicación después de ese periodo, el manuscrito tendrá
que ser enviado de nuevo por el autor, iniciándose un nuevo proceso de revisión. Ciencias Marinas se reserva el derecho de
devolver al autor para su revisión aquellos manuscritos e ilustraciones que no se presenten en la forma prescrita de esta guÃa.
ENV�O DE LA VERSIÓN FINAL PARA SU PUBLICACIÓN
Una vez aceptado el trabajo, se deberán enviar, ya sea por correo electrónico o a través de la página electrónica de la revista, los
archivos correspondientes al artÃculo (español e inglés, o solicitar el servicio de traducción) en Microsoft Word o RTF y los de las
figuras, en los formatos editables arriba mencionados. Orden de presentación del escrito: tÃtulo, autor(es), institución(es),
dirección(es), tÃtulo corto para el encabezado de página, datos del autor que se encargará de la correspondencia (sin faltar una
dirección de correo electrónico), resumen (abstract) y palabras clave (key words) en ambos idiomas aunque se solicite la
traducción, texto, agradecimientos, referencias, tablas, pies de figura y figuras. Deberán indicarse el número de la figura y la
clave del manuscrito en cada figura. Las páginas se numerarán de forma consecutiva.
Los artÃculos aceptados por Ciencias Marinas pasan a ser propiedad de la misma y no se devuelven los originales.
Pruebas y reimpresos
Antes de su publicación, los autores recibirán una prueba de imprenta del trabajo tipografiado en formato PDF, y son
responsables de su revisión final; deberán efectuar los cambios mÃnimos necesarios, corregirán los errores de impresión y
devolverán la prueba en un plazo no mayor a una semana a partir de su fecha de recepción. Cambios mayores serán con cargo al
autor. Los autores podrán acceder a la copia original de la versión publicada del artÃculo, en formato PDF, directamente en la
página electrónica de Ciencias Marinas (www.cienciasmarinas.com).

Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file (text, tables, figs, etc.) is in ONE Portable Document Format (PDF) file (smaller than 900 kb).
- The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed at the end of the text in separate pages (one per page).
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- Publication rate is 10 dlls per page and translation rate (if requested by the authors, English-Spanish or Spanis-English) are 10 dlls per page.
